ATI 2024: A Resounding Success for KwaZulu-Natal’s Recovery

Africa’s Travel Indaba (ATI) 2024, held in KwaZulu-Natal from May 18-20, proved to be a resounding success, surpassing expectations and contributing significantly to the province’s economic recovery. The event attracted a large number of delegates, generating direct spending of over R226 million, which had a multiplier effect of R330 million and contributed over R500 million to the province’s GDP. The positive impact of ATI was not limited to its economic benefits. It also provided a platform for collaboration, innovation, and the sharing of best practices among tourism stakeholders. One notable outcome of the event was the increased focus on collaborative competition among coastal provinces. Tourism KZN, Wesgrow, and the Eastern Cape Tourism Board came together to explore ways to package their offerings and attract more cruise tourism to the region. Another significant achievement of ATI was the implementation of the Basic Quality Verification (BQV) programme, which recognized 150 properties in villages and small towns. This programme aims to improve the quality and standards of tourism accommodation in these areas, providing them with the necessary tools to access funding and participate in the formal tourism market. The success of ATI 2024 was widely acknowledged by tourism industry leaders. Phindile Makwakwa, Tourism KZN’s Chief Operating Officer, expressed her delight at the event’s outcome, stating that it showed that KwaZulu-Natal had truly recovered from the challenges posed by the pandemic. SA Tourism CEO Nombulelo Guliwe echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of ATI as a platform for showcasing Africa’s diverse tourism offerings to the global market. The Durban ICC Chief Operating Officer, John Oritho, also praised the event, highlighting the valuable interactions and networking opportunities it provided. The success of ATI 2024 is a testament to the resilience and potential of KwaZulu-Natal’s tourism sector. It serves as a catalyst for further growth and innovation, promoting economic development and job creation across the province.
