Atletico Madrid has taken a strong stance against fan misconduct, issuing a permanent stadium ban to a supporter identified as throwing an object onto the pitch during Sunday’s heated La Liga derby against Real Madrid. The incident, which occurred in the second half after Real Madrid took the lead, prompted a 20-minute suspension of the match as Atletico fans hurled objects towards visiting goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Despite the disruption, Atletico managed to salvage a 1-1 draw thanks to a late goal from Angel Correa. The club, however, has made it clear that such behavior will not be tolerated.
“Our Security Department continues to work with the Police to identify the rest of those involved, who will be permanently expelled,” Atletico declared in a statement. The club also announced its intention to prohibit any items or clothing that could be used to conceal identity within the stadium.
This decisive action comes as Atletico prepares for a crucial Champions League clash against Benfica on Wednesday. The club currently sits in fourth place in La Liga, determined to maintain its strong position in the league standings. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in addressing fan behavior and ensuring a safe and respectful environment within the beautiful game.
