Attempted Escape at Maine’s Youth Prison

On January 28th, around 10:40 pm, staff at Long Creek Youth Development Center called South Portland police to establish a perimeter around their campus. Around 10 minutes later, the police received a second call from the facility, reporting a commotion and a male caller claiming to be at home with someone shooting at his sister. This call was dismissed as unrelated.

At approximately 11 pm, the police reported that nine boys had escaped from an office unit and entered the fenced-in yard with weapons such as a broken guitar, a table clamp, and a fire extinguisher. The details regarding how they escaped, what damage they caused, and subsequent events remain unclear. According to South Portland Police Chief Daniel Ahern, no one was injured, and the residents did not manage to leave the fenced area. The police left the scene around 1:30 am.

The Department of Corrections and union officials have yet to respond to inquiries about the incident. This story is ongoing and may be subject to further updates.
