Aurora Partners with FBI to Host ‘Empowering Seniors Against Scams’ Workshop

To address the growing concern of scams targeting seniors, the city of Aurora, in collaboration with the FBI, will host a ‘Empowering Seniors Against Scams’ workshop on May 15th, coinciding with National Senior Fraud Awareness Day. This free workshop aims to equip participants with essential knowledge and tools to recognize and avoid scams that jeopardize financial stability. The workshop will be held simultaneously at two locations – Senior Services Associates (2111 Plum St.) and Bardwell Residences (301 Weston Ave.) – to facilitate broader accessibility.

Clayton Muhammad, chief communications and equity officer for the city of Aurora, highlights the significance of this initiative. He notes that scams have become a prevalent issue, prompting the need for increased awareness and education among seniors. The workshop will focus on common phone-based scams rather than complex computer-related issues, ensuring relevance to everyday experiences.

The workshop’s popularity is evident in the overwhelming response received over the weekend, with over 100 applications from individuals outside the workshop site locations. To accommodate the high demand, registration remains open. Interested individuals can register by calling 630–256-3406, emailing boatrightk@aurora.il.us, or visiting the event registration page online (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/empowering-seniors-against-scams-workshop-tickets-886028564287?aff=oddtdtcreator).

This initiative underscores the city’s commitment to safeguarding the well-being of its senior community. By empowering seniors with knowledge and resources, Aurora aims to minimize the risks associated with scams and promote financial security for its elderly population.
