Australia has officially unveiled its squad for the highly anticipated first Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, with a new face set to grace the opening batting position. The five-Test series is scheduled to commence in Perth on November 22nd, and the selection committee has opted for Nathan McSweeney to partner Usman Khawaja at the top of the order.
McSweeney, who is yet to make his Test debut, has emerged as a strong contender following a stellar start to the domestic season and impressive performances in recent Australia A matches against India A. His unbeaten 88 in Mackay during the first Australia A match particularly caught the eye of selectors.
Despite competition from established names like Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft, and rising star Sam Konstas, McSweeney’s consistent form and potential ultimately sealed his selection.
The squad also features a surprise inclusion in wicketkeeper-batsman Josh Inglis, who has been in exceptional form in the Sheffield Shield, recently smashing two centuries in Perth. While not a direct contender for the opening spot, Inglis’ inclusion provides Australia with additional batting depth and a valuable wicketkeeping option.
The selection committee, led by George Bailey, highlighted McSweeney’s attributes and recent domestic form as key factors in his selection. Bailey stated, “Nathan has displayed the attributes we believe will equip him well for Test cricket, along with a strong recent record in domestic cricket. His performances for South Australia and Australia A support our view that he is ready for this opportunity at Test level.”
Australia’s bowling attack will be led by the experienced trio of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc, with Nathan Lyon set to play his 130th Test match. Lyon, Australia’s premier spin bowler, has taken an impressive 530 Test wickets throughout his career. Scott Boland will provide back-up as the reserve fast bowler following Michael Neser’s injury.
Travis Head will bat at number five, while Mitchell Marsh will fill the all-rounder role.
The Border-Gavaskar series promises to be a thrilling encounter between two cricketing giants. The teams will clash in Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney throughout the series. Australia will be looking to reclaim the trophy they lost to India in their last series encounter. With a new opening batsman and a strong squad, Australia will be determined to make a strong start to the series and put their mark on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
