Austrian Airlines has launched a new year-round nonstop route between Vienna and Boston, marking a significant expansion of its North American network. The maiden voyage took place on Monday, July 1st, 2024, with the airline operating up to six weekly flights on the route using a Boeing 767 aircraft with 211 seats.
Passengers on the inaugural flight were welcomed by Austrian Airlines Chief Commercial Officer Michael Trestl and Julian Jäger, Joint CEO and COO of Vienna Airport. The celebration included a ribbon-cutting ceremony, special culinary treats, and a sketch artist capturing the memorable moments.
Michael Trestl expressed his enthusiasm about the new route, stating, “We are delighted to add an extremely attractive destination to our Austrian Airlines destination portfolio with Boston. By expanding our long-haul network, we are offering our passengers a diverse travel program, increasing our presence in the international market and strengthening our hub in Vienna.” He continued, “Boston is a fascinating destination for leisure and business travelers with its renowned educational institutions, including Harvard and MIT, its business affiliations and the incomparable charm of the city. It will also make it even easier for visitors from the USA to travel to Vienna in the future.”
The new Vienna-Boston route spans approximately 6,500 kilometers and takes about 9 hours to complete. Flights are scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with an additional flight every second Tuesday. The flights depart from Vienna at 10:40 a.m., arriving in Boston at 01:50 p.m. local time. Return flights leave Boston at 05:10 p.m. and arrive in Vienna at 07:25 a.m. the following day.
The introduction of this route brings Austrian Airlines’ total number of intercontinental destinations to 18. Julian Jäger, Joint CEO and COO of Vienna Airport, highlighted the significance of the new connection, stating, “The USA is the most important long-haul market for Vienna Airport. With the new direct connection to Boston, our home carrier Austrian Airlines is expanding its North America offering. Boston, one of the oldest cities in the USA, offers numerous cultural and historical highlights. The modernization and expansion of the Austrian Airlines long-haul fleet to eleven Boeing 787 Dreamliners increases the attractiveness of North American travel and gives Vienna’s economy and tourism an important boost at the beginning of summer.”
Norbert Kettner, Managing Director of Vienna Tourist Board, also expressed his delight about the strengthened connection to the USA, saying, “As a medium-sized capital of a small country, Vienna can succeed in tourism and overall economically only through its connection to international transport routes. In 2024, Vienna will continue to be a globally connected city – the new Boston flight of our strategic partner Austrian Airlines provides a strong boost for both leisure tourism and the conference sector. Vienna’s tourism is once again as international as it was before the pandemic. The USA, which is Vienna’s most important long-distance market and was already above its pre-pandemic level in 2023, played a major role in this.”
The new route is expected to benefit both leisure and business travelers, providing a convenient and direct connection between Vienna and Boston. The expansion of Austrian Airlines’ North American network further strengthens its position in the international market and enhances Vienna’s appeal as a global travel destination.
