BMW, Ford, and Honda have officially launched ChargeScape, a joint venture that marks a significant step forward in the integration of electric vehicles (EVs) with the power grid. This new software platform, announced last year, has now appointed its first CEO and CTO, signifying the beginning of operations.
ChargeScape is designed to bridge the gap between EVs and the power grid, creating a dynamic system that benefits both. By integrating EVs into the grid, ChargeScape helps to stabilize the flow of electricity, mitigating the strain on power grids that is often caused by the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources.
The initiative reflects the automakers’ continued commitment to EVs, with a focus on reducing the total cost of ownership for customers. As the adoption of EVs increases, the cost of charging at home – where the majority of EV charging occurs – becomes a major concern for drivers. ChargeScape addresses this issue by offering smart charging capabilities that can reduce charging costs.
Furthermore, ChargeScape leverages V1G (vehicle-to-grid) and V2G (vehicle-to-grid) technology to optimize the flow of electricity. The platform can temporarily reduce electricity demand from EVs during peak hours, and even send energy back to the grid when needed. ChargeScape builds upon the successful foundation of the Open Vehicle-Grid Integration Platform (OVGIP), which has already established partnerships with multiple utilities across the US. This platform has proven its effectiveness in optimizing EV charging and integrating vehicles into the grid.
To lead ChargeScape, the company has appointed Joseph Vellone as CEO. Vellone brings extensive experience in the energy and climate sectors, most recently from ev.energy, where he led the expansion of their North American operations. His expertise in cleantech start-ups aligns perfectly with ChargeScape’s mission.
Kalidindi Raju has been named as ChargeScape’s CTO, bringing over 15 years of experience in leading technology organizations. His expertise in cloud architecture, artificial intelligence, and data engineering will be critical in developing and implementing ChargeScape’s technology.
