Avani Lekhara Makes History with Back-to-Back Paralympic Gold, Mona Agarwal Secures Bronze

Avani Lekhara, the ace Indian shooter, has etched her name in history by becoming the first Indian to win back-to-back Paralympic gold medals. She achieved this remarkable feat at the Paris Paralympics in the women’s 10m air rifle (SH1) shooting competition. With a record-breaking score of 249.7, Avani surpassed her own Paralympic record of 249.6, which she had set at the Tokyo Paralympics three years ago.

Avani’s unwavering focus and determination were evident in her performance. “It was a very close final. There was very less gap between 1, 2 and 3. I was focusing on my thought process and not the result,” she shared, highlighting her mental strength. “I’m happy that the Indian national anthem was the first national anthem that got played in the arena this time too. I have two more matches to go so I’m focusing on winning more medals for the country,” she added, displaying her ambition to bring home more victories for India.

Joining Avani on the podium was bronze medalist Mona Agarwal, marking a historic double win for India in the event. Mona, who experimented with various sports before settling on shooting, spoke about the challenges she faced and the inspiration she drew from Avani. “It was very difficult but I succeeded. So, thank you. Being in the company of Avani definitely helped. She is a champion and she inspires me.” Mona’s accomplishment, scoring 228.7 points, marks a significant moment for Indian shooting at the Paralympics, as it is the first time two Indian shooters have won medals in the same event.

Avani’s journey to Paralympic success has been paved with challenges. She battled several health problems, including undergoing gallbladder surgery, which required a one-and-a-half-month recovery period. However, her dedication and perseverance remained unshaken. Working as an assistant conservator of forest with the Rajasthan government, Avani’s commitment to her sport exemplifies her determination to overcome obstacles.

The SH1 category, which Avani competes in, is designated for athletes with impaired movement in their arms, lower trunk, or legs, or those who have no limbs at all. Avani and Mona’s achievements stand as a testament to their resilience, talent, and the indomitable spirit of Indian athletes on the global stage.
