As we transition into May, the dreary spring weather finally gives way to brighter and sunnier days. However, with this welcomed change comes an important reminder from the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) regarding the Highway Code.
Motorists often experience moments of dazzling brightness while driving, particularly when cloud cover clears or after turning a bend. These instances can pose significant risks, potentially leading to loss of vehicle control. Therefore, it is crucial to know how to respond in such situations.
The Highway Code provides clear guidelines for motorists’ vision under Rule 92, 93, and 94. Rule 93 specifically addresses what drivers should do when encountering dazzling sunlight. The DVSA emphasizes the importance of adhering to this rule, stating, ‘It’s important to remember Rule 93 of The Highway Code.’
Many drivers may be unaware that if they are dazzled by bright sunlight, they should immediately slow down or even stop their vehicle if their visibility is compromised. The code explicitly states, ‘Slow down, and if necessary stop, if you are dazzled by bright sunlight.’
Additionally, Rule 92 stipulates that drivers must be able to read a number plate from 20 meters away before driving. If glasses are required for this task, they must be worn while driving.
As the sunny weather approaches, it is also worth remembering Rule 94 of the Highway Code. It is easy to forget about wearing sunglasses when returning to your car after spending time at the beach, but doing so could result in a traffic stop. The code states, ‘At night or in poor visibility, do not use tinted glasses, lenses, or visors if they restrict your vision.’
By following these guidelines, particularly Rule 93, motorists can ensure their safety and the safety of others on the road during the brighter and warmer spring days.
