Obsidian Entertainment’s highly anticipated RPG, Avowed, has been delayed until next year. An announcement on X (formerly Twitter) revealed the game’s new release date: February 18, 2025. Xbox explained the delay, stating that it wants to give players a chance to catch up on their backlogs. The publisher is set to release numerous titles throughout the remainder of 2024, including expansions for popular franchises like World of Warcraft and Diablo 4, alongside brand new games such as Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Given the anticipated popularity of the next Call of Duty installment, it’s understandable why Xbox would want to avoid having Avowed get overshadowed. The delay also allows Obsidian Entertainment more time to polish the game.
The original release window for Avowed was announced during Xbox’s January Developer Direct, but there haven’t been any significant updates since. While we received some glimpses of the game’s first- and third-person gameplay in 2024, as well as information about its hub-based design, many details remain shrouded in mystery. The game is set in the established Pillars of Eternity universe, in a world called Eora, and will follow Obsidian’s tradition of offering players impactful choices that affect both gameplay and narrative. However, the specific storyline remains largely unknown.
We can expect some new information about Avowed to be revealed at Gamescom later this month. Xbox has planned three big presentations for the event, featuring Avowed, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and Starfield: Shattered Space. The latter two games lack official release dates, but Xbox appears confident that they will launch in 2024, based on their recent X post.
