Avowed: Obsidian’s Next Big RPG Is Coming Soon

Obsidian Entertainment, known for crafting captivating RPGs like Pillars of Eternity, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Fallout: New Vegas, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, is gearing up to release their latest masterpiece, Avowed. This first-person RPG promises a thrilling adventure set in the world of Eora, originally established in Pillars of Eternity. While visually reminiscent of Skyrim, Avowed offers a distinct experience.

Initial plans for a release in Fall 2024 have been adjusted, with internal reports suggesting a shift to 2025. This delay, however, is attributed to a desire to refine the game and ensure a polished experience for players.

As an Xbox first-party title, Avowed will be exclusive to Xbox and PC platforms, at least for the foreseeable future. The game’s gameplay trailer showcased the vibrant world of the Living Lands, featuring diverse races, unique biomes, and dangerous creatures. The story revolves around a mysterious plague that corrupts souls, with players facing the choice of becoming a savior or a villain.

Avowed’s gameplay mechanics are reminiscent of Skyrim, but with distinct twists. Players can wield a combination of one-handed weapons like swords and pistols, alongside two-handed weapons and magic, allowing for flexible combat styles. Character creation grants freedom in crafting unique builds with a deep skill tree.

Unlike Skyrim’s singular open world, Avowed adopts a hub-based structure, allowing for more focused storytelling and detailed environments. Players can embark on their adventure with companions, who are not just allies but also integral to the narrative and offer a deeper emotional connection.

The game’s combat system allows for both first and third-person perspectives, offering players a choice in how they engage with the world. Gear can be upgraded, and a respec system allows for re-allocating skills to further customize the experience.

Avowed will be available on Xbox Game Pass upon release, giving subscribers access to this exciting new RPG. While a specific release date is yet to be announced, the anticipation for this Obsidian title continues to grow.
