BAE Systems Secures Contract for Advanced Naval Guns for Dutch and Belgian Navies

In a significant enhancement of defense capabilities for two European NATO allies, BAE Systems has secured a contract with the Dutch Materiel and IT Command (COMMIT) to deliver eight advanced Bofors 40Mk4 naval gun systems. This contract represents a vital advancement in the joint anti-submarine warfare frigate program initiated by the Royal Netherlands and Belgian Navies.

The program entails the construction of two frigates for each nation, with each frigate equipped with two Bofors 40Mk4 naval guns. This arrangement will empower both navies to effectively safeguard their maritime interests. The Bofors 40Mk4 is a compact, lightweight system designed for efficient engagement in both anti-aircraft and anti-surface warfare operations. Its versatility allows for seamless switching between various ammunition types, enabling targeted responses to threats across air, land, and sea.

The contract includes provisions for installation, training, documentation, spare parts, and tools, with an option to incorporate BAE Systems’ advanced 3P programmable ammunition and additional guns for training purposes. The first gun is expected to be delivered in 2026.

Stefan Löfström, marketing and sales director at BAE Systems Bofors, emphasized the contract’s importance, stating, “This key milestone will ensure the new frigates have the cutting-edge capabilities they require, particularly with the addition of our advanced 3P ammunition.” He further reaffirmed BAE Systems’ commitment to supporting NATO allies: “We continue to deliver enhanced capabilities to help keep Europe safe.”

The 40mm Bofors 3P ammunition, when paired with the Bofors 40mm gun system, offers unparalleled combat flexibility. This programmable ammunition features six distinct function modes, providing optimal effectiveness against a range of threats. This combination of proven gun technology and advanced ammunition ensures that the system is prepared to tackle both anticipated and unforeseen challenges.

The Dutch and Belgian Navies’ investment in the Bofors 40Mk4 naval gun systems underscores their commitment to strengthening defense capabilities and contributing to regional security. BAE Systems’ established reputation in delivering advanced defense solutions reinforces its role as a key partner in maritime safety. The integration of the 40Mk4 system alongside the 3P ammunition will significantly enhance the operational readiness of both navies, ensuring they are equipped to address evolving security threats.
