Vancouver, BC – December 9, 2024 – Ballard Power Systems (BLDP) announced a groundbreaking multi-year agreement with Stadler US to provide 8 megawatts of its advanced FCmove®-HD+ fuel cell engines. These engines will power a new fleet of zero-emission passenger trains for the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), marking a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to decarbonize its transportation sector. This deal strengthens Ballard’s position as a leading player in the rapidly growing fuel cell market.
The FCmove®-HD+ engines will be integrated into Stadler’s FLIRT H2 line of zero-emission trains. This partnership builds on a successful three-year collaboration that culminated in the creation of the first Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)-compliant hydrogen-powered passenger train in the United States. This achievement demonstrated the feasibility and reliability of Ballard’s hydrogen fuel cell technology in real-world applications, setting the stage for this major order.
Caltrans’ commitment to sustainable transportation is underscored by their purchase of 10 FLIRT H2 trains, with an option to purchase 19 more. This investment highlights California’s ambitious goals to reduce emissions and transition to cleaner transportation options. The deployment of these zero-emission trains will significantly enhance California’s sustainable rail capabilities, offering a cleaner, more eco-friendly alternative to traditional diesel-powered trains.
“We are excited to expand our partnership with Stadler and contribute to Caltrans’ vision of a greener California,” said Randy MacEwen, CEO of Ballard Power Systems. “This substantial order significantly boosts our presence in the rail sector and showcases the powerful advantages of Ballard fuel cell engines. Our zero-emission solution competes with diesel engines in terms of payload capacity, range, reliability, and refueling times, making them ideal for areas without extensive electrical infrastructure.” MacEwen emphasized how fuel cells are crucial in reducing the environmental impact of rail transportation.
Martin Ritter, CEO of Stadler US, added, “Stadler is thrilled to partner with Ballard and Caltrans to deliver these innovative zero-emission trains. The FLIRT H2 marks a significant leap forward in sustainable rail technology, offering emission-free transportation on non-electrified or partially electrified lines. This reduces the need for costly overhead catenary line electrification, making it a more economically viable solution for widespread adoption.” Ritter highlighted the long-term benefits of the partnership in helping California achieve its environmental goals.
