On May 10th, 2024, airBaltic, Latvia’s national airline, joined hands with UPB Nams, the Ozola un Bula architect office, and RIX Riga Airport to mark a significant milestone in the construction of the Baltic Cargo Hub by burying a time capsule. This hub, poised to be the Baltics’ most extensive dedicated air cargo handling center, will enhance RIX Riga Airport’s standing as a premier air cargo hub. With direct apron access, the facility promises swift and seamless cargo import, export, and transit operations.

A State-of-the-Art Facility for Efficient Cargo Handling

The upcoming Baltic Cargo Hub will span across 6,895 square meters, housing dedicated zones for cargo operations and offices. Equipped with state-of-the-art semi-automatic Material Handling Systems, it aims to optimize efficiency for various cargo types. The hub will feature specialized areas including temperature-controlled rooms for sensitive items like pharmaceuticals, as well as provisions for handling dangerous goods, live animals, and valuables. Essential services such as the Food and Veterinary Service and a Customs checkpoint will be seamlessly integrated.

Commitment to Innovation and Sustainability

Leveraging Building Information Modeling (BIM) for eco-friendly construction, the project is slated to attain BREEAM certification and is projected to be completed within 12 months. airBaltic serves more than 130 routes connecting Riga, Tallinn, Vilnius, Tampere, and seasonally Gran Canaria, providing access to diverse destinations across Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and the Caucasus region. The Baltic Cargo Hub represents airBaltic’s commitment to innovation and development, ensuring a prosperous future for air cargo in the region.
