Baltimore Sues Ship Owners for Deadly Bridge Collapse
Baltimore has filed a lawsuit against the owner and manager of the container ship that struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge last month, resulting in its collapse and the tragic deaths of six workers.
The lawsuit alleges negligence, accusing Grace Ocean Private Ltd. and Synergy Marine Pte Ltd. of failing to ensure the vessel’s seaworthiness and providing an incompetent crew. The companies are also accused of ignoring potential power issues that could have contributed to the disaster.
In their petition, Baltimore officials seek to hold the ship’s owner and manager fully liable for the damage caused by the collapse. The city argues that the companies’ actions resulted in the destruction of the bridge, the shutdown of the Port of Baltimore, and the disruption of a crucial East Coast trucking route.
The lawsuit is part of a series of legal actions related to the bridge collapse. Federal investigations are underway, and victims’ families have also filed lawsuits seeking accountability.
Meanwhile, salvage crews continue to remove debris from the Patapsco River, but the port’s main shipping channel remains closed, causing significant economic disruption to the Baltimore region.
