Banerjee Slams Job Losses, Highlights Democracy’s Role and Vows Action Against Injustice

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has strongly criticized the loss of jobs for thousands of school staff, questioning who will teach the children now that 26,000 of them have been affected. Addressing an election rally in Bhatar, East Burdwan, Banerjee expressed her concerns about the impact on education and the role of the courts in overturning appointments. Banerjee slammed the verdict of the Calcutta High Court, which scrapped the West Bengal School Service Commission’s 2016 selection process, affecting 25,757 appointments. She questioned the unilateral decision to take away the jobs of so many teachers and demanded an explanation from those who passed the judgment. Banerjee also expressed concerns about the social stigma faced by the former teachers and the drastic steps they might take in desperation. She vowed to appeal the verdict in the Supreme Court and urged the people to vote and show those who enjoy court protection that ultimately, it is the people who matter in a democracy. Banerjee emphasized the importance of education and questioned how the BJP or RSS will be able to provide substitutes for the teachers who have lost their jobs. She also criticized the opposition for allegedly influencing the court’s judgment and enjoying protection from prosecution.
