Bangladesh Acknowledges 88 Cases of Communal Violence Against Minorities Post-Hasina Ouster

Bangladesh’s interim government has officially acknowledged a disturbing surge in communal violence targeting minority groups, primarily Hindus, in the aftermath of the August 2024 political crisis that led to the departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. On Tuesday, December 10th, the government confirmed a total of 88 incidents of violence since the political upheaval began.

This acknowledgment follows concerns raised by India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who described recent attacks on minorities as “regrettable incidents” and expressed India’s apprehension regarding the safety and well-being of these communities. His concerns were voiced during discussions with Bangladeshi leadership.

According to Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to interim government head Muhammad Yunus, 70 arrests have been made in connection with these 88 cases, which were filed between August 5th and October 22nd. However, Alam indicated that this number is likely to rise as investigations continue and new incidents are reported from various regions of the country, including Sunamganj in the northeast and Gazipur in the central region. He noted that additional details regarding incidents after October 22nd will be released shortly.

While the government maintains that most attacks were not solely religiously motivated, citing some instances linked to personal disputes or targeting former members of the ruling party, the sheer number of incidents has sparked widespread alarm. The government has emphasized that police are actively investigating and taking appropriate action in response to the violence.

The situation highlights a complex interplay of political turmoil and communal tensions. The scale of the violence, with reports of attacks on temples and other places of worship for minority groups, underscores the urgent need for comprehensive investigation and effective measures to ensure the safety and security of all citizens, regardless of religious affiliation. The international community, particularly neighboring India, is closely monitoring the situation and expressing serious concerns about the protection of minority rights in Bangladesh.

The ongoing investigation is crucial to determining the full extent of the violence and to holding those responsible accountable. The international community’s continued attention to this issue is vital to pressuring the Bangladeshi government to address the root causes of this unrest and ensure the safety and protection of its minority populations. The coming weeks and months will be critical in determining whether the interim government can effectively address these challenges and restore peace and stability to the nation.
