Bangladesh Lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar Found Murdered in Kolkata

Anwarul Azim Anar, a member of Parliament from Bangladesh, has been found murdered in Kolkata, India. The 59-year-old lawmaker had been missing since May 13, and his body was found in a flat in Kolkata on Wednesday.

Anar, who was a member of Bangladesh’s ruling Awami League, was representing Jhenaidah-4 constituency in the country’s parliament. He was last seen on the afternoon of May 13 when he went with friends to a home in Bidhannagar near Kolkata for a medical check-up.

A family friend, Gopal Viswas, reported that Anar had mentioned he would be travelling to Delhi, but there has been no physical presence or direct contact with him since May 13. Despite efforts to reach him, including mobile messages exchanged with his family in Dhaka and his friend in Bidhannagar, there was no response.

A missing complaint was filed at the Baranagar police station in Bidhannagar on May 18, and on Wednesday, Bangladesh Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan announced that Anar had been found murdered in Kolkata. Khan said that Indian police are cooperating with the investigation and that an SIT has been formed to start an investigation.

The motive for the murder is still unknown, but Khan said that all the killers involved are Bangladeshis and that it was a planned murder. The body of Anar is yet to be recovered, and the investigation is ongoing.

Anar’s family members are also set to arrive in Kolkata for further formalities, and their visa process is underway.
