Bangladesh Seeks Extradition of Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India

Bangladesh is considering requesting India to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to the neighboring country last week amidst widespread protests in Bangladesh. The decision, according to Mohammad Touhid Hossain, Bangladesh’s de-facto foreign minister, will depend on the recommendations of the country’s home and law ministries.

Hossain, in an interview with Reuters, acknowledged that Hasina faces multiple legal cases in Bangladesh. He stated that if the ministries decide to proceed with the extradition request, Bangladesh would be obligated to approach India for her return. He expressed concerns about the potential diplomatic implications, stating that seeking extradition could create an “embarrassing situation” for the Indian government. However, he expressed confidence that India is aware of the situation and would handle it appropriately.

Hasina’s departure from Bangladesh followed a violent uprising against her government, which resulted in the deaths of nearly 300 people, including many students. The protests were sparked by a controversial job quota bill. Since her escape, Hasina has been named in two murder cases, along with senior members of her cabinet. A third case has been initiated against her, involving allegations of murder, torture, and genocide during the protests.

At least three of Hasina’s former ministers and advisors have been arrested in Bangladesh. In her first official statement since fleeing the country, Hasina called for justice, demanding punishment for those responsible for the killings and sabotage during the protests.

The current interim government in Bangladesh is led by Nobel laureate Mohammed Yunus. The council of advisors includes retired officials, lawyers, student leaders who participated in the protests, and some opposition politicians.
