Bangladesh’s Chief Justice and Central Bank Governor Resign Amid Student Protests

Bangladesh’s political landscape has been shaken by a wave of student protests that have resulted in the resignations of key officials, including the Chief Justice and the Central Bank Governor.

The Chief Justice, Obaidul Hassan, submitted his resignation after students warned him of “dire consequences” if he did not. The law ministry official confirmed the resignation, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, Abdur Rouf Talukder, the Governor of Bangladesh Bank, has also resigned. However, his resignation has not yet been accepted due to the significance of his position, according to finance ministry adviser Salehuddin Ahmed.

The resignations come on the heels of the forced resignations of four deputy governors of Bangladesh Bank, who were accused of corruption by 300 to 400 bank officials.

These events are part of a wider uprising that has engulfed Bangladesh, leading to the death of approximately 300 people, many of whom were students. The protests have forced Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to seek refuge in New Delhi, India, marking the end of her 15-year uninterrupted rule in the South Asian nation of 170 million people. The student-led protests have brought about a significant shift in the political landscape of Bangladesh, leaving the future of the country uncertain.
