The Women’s Super League (WSL) and Women’s Championship have secured a historic sponsorship deal with Barclays, worth over £30 million ($40.05 million). This landmark agreement represents the most lucrative commercial deal in the history of women’s football in Britain.
The multi-year sponsorship deal marks a significant financial boost for both leagues, which were taken over by Women’s Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL) in August. The Football Association (FA) has lauded this deal as the biggest ever in women’s soccer in the UK, highlighting Barclays’ commitment to strengthening their support for the women’s game.
This agreement further expands Barclays’ involvement in the sport. They have also extended their partnership with the FA for an additional three years, taking the partnership until 2028. Additionally, they have renewed their sponsorship of the men’s Premier League for an additional four years, retaining their position as the official banking partner until 2029.
The WSL saw Chelsea claim their seventh title last season, winning on goal difference under former coach Emma Hayes. Chelsea is now under the guidance of Frenchwoman Sonia Bompastor. The new season has already kicked off, with Manchester City drawing with Arsenal in their opening match. Chelsea, Brighton & Hove Albion, Tottenham Hotspur, and Manchester United all secured victories in their first games of the season.
This significant investment from Barclays promises to be a game-changer for women’s football in the UK, further propelling the growth and visibility of the sport.
