The Bassam Freiha Art Foundation (BFAF) is preparing to unveil a captivating collection of exhibitions this October, offering a diverse exploration of artistic expression. From the depths of Emirati abstract art to the intricacies of the Orientalist perspective, the series promises to ignite dialogue and spark inspiration.
The Main Gallery, Annex Gallery, and the Sculpture Garden will come alive with four unique exhibitions, kicking off on October 14th and running until mid-February.
Eternal Hour: Emirati Abstraction
Curated by Dr. Michaela Watrelot, “Eternal Hour: Emirati Abstraction” showcases the contributions of 14 influential Emirati artists to the regional art scene. This exhibition draws from the Ministry of Culture, personal studios, and private collections, highlighting the evolving narrative of abstract art in the Emirates over the past two decades.
The exhibition delves into the nuanced concept of time—its fleeting yet enduring nature—through artworks that explore the interplay of tradition, modern identity, and personal experiences. It features works by pioneering figures like Hassan Sharif, his brother Hussain, Abdullah Al Saadi, Mohammed Kazem, and Mohamed Ahmed Ibrahim, collectively known as ‘the five’.
“To be able to display their works alongside other key figures experimenting with geometry, calligraphy and architecture within the realms of abstraction is monumental,” shares Dr. Watrelot. “This would not be possible without the support of the UAE Ministry of Culture, Barjeel Art Foundation, as well as the artists, collectors and galleries who have loaned pieces to Bassam Freiha Art Foundation. I am grateful for their contributions to Hour Eternal, and I look forward to sharing these pieces with the public from October.”
Other featured artists like Abdul Qader Al Rais and Mona Al Khaja merge traditional Emirati themes with contemporary artistic expressions, offering a unique lens on the cultural and environmental essence of the UAE.
Visions of the Orient
“Visions of the Orient” offers a peek into the private Orientalist collection of Bassam Said Freiha, curated over five decades. This exhibition showcases Western artistic interpretations of the East, with pieces originating from a variety of European countries and featuring the works of artists such as Rudolphe Ernst and Léon Comerre. These pieces reflect the West’s romanticized views of Eastern landscapes and cultures, drawn from 19th-century explorations.
Boundaries and Lines from Letters by Tarek Elkassouf
Displayed in the Annex Gallery, Tarek Elkassouf’s “Boundaries” consists of 29 limestone sculptures embellished with 22k gold, exploring societal norms and personal boundaries. The accompanying “Lines from Letters” exhibition provides insights into Elkassouf’s creative process, displaying early sketches and writings that outline his artistic journey.
Anthony James’ Sculptural Displays
The Sculpture Garden will feature two striking pieces by Anthony James, whose works are recognized globally for their innovative design and presence in galleries across continents.
This series of exhibitions, running until mid-February, not only showcases diverse artistic expressions but also aims to enrich visitor experiences through ongoing educational activities coordinated by Emilie Dubois, the foundation’s Art Educator and Curatorial Liaison. The educational program features workshops and talks, providing deeper insights into the exhibitions and the artists featured.
The Bassam Freiha Art Foundation invites art enthusiasts, cultural explorers, and anyone curious about the world of art to immerse themselves in this enriching collection of exhibitions.
