Battlefield Returns to its Roots: Inspired by Battlefield 3 & 4

Get ready for a return to form! The next Battlefield game is ditching the sprawling, chaotic maps of Battlefield 2042 and taking a page from the beloved Battlefield 3 and 4 era. This means focusing on modern warfare and smaller, more manageable maps designed for intense, close-quarters combat.

EA is throwing everything they’ve got at this new Battlefield game, led by the largest development team in franchise history. The team is laser-focused on delivering the core Battlefield experience that players crave. They’re determined to avoid repeating the mistakes of Battlefield 2042, which received a less-than-stellar reception upon its release.

The new Battlefield will feature a more cohesive 64-player framework, doing away with the 128-player chaos of its predecessor. In an interview with IGN, Battlefield head Vince Zampella shared insights into the upcoming game: “I mean, if you look back to the peak or the pinnacle of Battlefield, it’s that Battlefield 3 / Battlefield 4 era where everything was modern. And I think we have to get back to the core of what Battlefield is and do that amazingly well, and then we’ll see where it goes from there. But I think for me, it’s that peak of Battlefield-ness is in that Battlefield 3 and 4 days.”

Zampella further elaborated on the shift in map design, stating, “So like you said, the maps, once they get to a certain scale, become different. It’s a different play space, and I think you have to design around that. So we are designing something that is more akin to previous Battlefields. I’d rather have nice, dense, really nice, well-designed play spaces. Some of them are really good. I can’t wait for you to see some of them.”

While EA hasn’t confirmed a release date yet, speculation points towards a potential 2025 release. Battlefield fans can expect an exciting return to the core values of the franchise with this next installment, bringing back the intense, modern warfare experience that made Battlefield 3 and 4 so popular.
