Battlestar Galactica Star Terry Carter Passes Away at 95
Renowned actor Terry Carter, best known for his role as Private Sugarman in the classic sitcom ‘The Phil Silvers Show,’ has passed away at the age of 95. On Tuesday, his son, Miguel Carter DeCoste, confirmed the news to the New York Times. Carter died peacefully at his home in Midtown Manhattan.
Carter’s career spanned decades, and he defied color barriers throughout his journey. In the 1950s and 1960s, he made a significant impact on stage and television. As a Black actor, he became a regular on a TV sitcom series, a first for African Americans at the time. Carter’s character in ‘The Phil Silvers Show’ ran for 92 episodes from 1955 to 1959.
Beyond acting, Carter also made history in the news industry. From 1965 to 1968, he became New England’s first Black TV anchor newscaster for WBZ-TV Eyewitness News in Boston. He also served as the station’s drama and movie critic.
Terry Carter’s legacy extends beyond his time on screen. He produced multicultural documentaries on influential figures such as dancer-choreographer Katherine Dunham and jazz great Duke Ellington. Carter’s unwavering commitment to breaking down boundaries and promoting diversity solidified his status as a trailblazer in the entertainment industry.
