Bayern Munich suffered a crushing 4-1 defeat at the hands of Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday, marking their second consecutive loss in the competition. Manager Vincent Kompany attributed the heavy loss to his team’s inability to capitalize on numerous missed opportunities.
Kompany expressed his disappointment, highlighting that Bayern’s control of possession and dominance in key moments should have translated into a more favorable outcome. “When you have control of a game and you have so much possession, especially against a team like Barcelona, you have to use the opportunity to take the momentum away from them,” Kompany said in a post-match press conference.
Despite Harry Kane’s early volley canceling out Raphinha’s opener, Bayern failed to sustain their momentum and allowed Barcelona to regain the lead through quick counter-attacks. “We felt like we could edge this game and turn it in our favor,” Kompany added. “But in key moments, we were outdone. The result is heavy, but we played against a good team. We have the ambition to win these games, and today we know we have to learn from this game so we can be stronger going forward.”
Bayern’s performance leaves them in a precarious position, currently sitting 23rd in the Champions League standings with a meager three points after three matches. The loss to Barcelona adds further pressure on Kompany and his team as they seek to rebound and find their footing in the tournament.
