Behind the Scenes: The Nerve Center of Chennai’s Street Race

A motorsport event, especially one involving high speeds and close competition, demands meticulous planning and execution. While the track, lighting, and safety barriers are visible to spectators, the real magic happens behind the scenes in a room known as Race Control. This is where the entire race operation is meticulously orchestrated, ensuring the safety and fairness of the event.

Located in the paddock, Race Control in Chennai is the nerve center of the inaugural street race. A team of 12 to 16 experienced officials, led by Race Director Farhan Vohra, monitor the track and make critical decisions throughout the race. This team is the ultimate authority in the event, responsible for ensuring the safety of drivers and spectators.

The room is equipped with multiple TV screens, each displaying a different camera angle, allowing the officials to track every corner of the 3.5km circuit. A total of 28 cameras are strategically positioned around the track, providing a comprehensive overview of the race. “We are here to monitor all activity on the track and mitigate any dangerous situations that may arise,” explains Vohra.

The Clerk of the Course (CoC) works closely with the Race Director and manages the race operations. Using wireless communication, the CoC keeps the track marshals informed of incidents or disruptions, instructing them on how to respond. There are over 300 marshals deployed during the two-day event, ready to intervene in case of emergencies.

Flag marshals communicate instructions to drivers using color-coded flags, informing them about track conditions and potential hazards. These flags are also digitally displayed for added visibility. Intervention marshals respond to incidents on the track, attending to stranded drivers, removing debris, and even extinguishing fires.

While the circuit has 19 corners, Race Control pays particular attention to certain sections identified as ‘super-critical’ due to the high approach speeds. The safety infrastructure of the Chennai street race is robust, incorporating state-of-the-art materials and crash absorption devices, assuring the highest standards of safety for drivers and spectators.

Race Control acts as the silent guardian of the race, working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure a safe and exciting spectacle for fans. The meticulous attention to detail and the dedicated team of officials are crucial to the success of the event. From the strategic positioning of cameras to the swift response of the marshals, Race Control is the heart and soul of the Chennai street race, ensuring a thrilling and secure experience for everyone involved.
