This indicates a continuation of the strategic partnership between the two countries, which was established during the recent pro-China presidency. China has expressed its commitment to further develop this partnership through enhanced cooperation in areas such as tourism, investment, and infrastructure development.
The PNC’s win is widely seen as an endorsement of President Mohamed Muizzu’s foreign policy, which notably includes a shift away from the previous government’s India-centric approach. The Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson congratulated the Maldives on the successful elections and expressed eagerness to collaborate in building a shared future for the benefit of both nations.
Muizzu’s victory is expected to boost China’s influence in the Maldives, which has been growing in recent years. China is currently a major partner in infrastructure projects in the Maldives and has also provided significant financial assistance.
