Bell Textron Canada Completes First Flight of Modernized CH-146 Griffon Helicopter for RCAF

Bell Textron Canada Limited, a subsidiary of Textron Inc., has achieved a significant milestone with the successful first flight of a modernized CH-146 Griffon helicopter for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). This upgraded helicopter, a variant of the Bell 412EP, represents a crucial step in the Griffon Limited Life Extension (GLLE) project.

Under the GLLE program, Bell is modernizing the CH-146 Griffon fleet by enhancing its avionics systems, cockpit displays, engines, and sensor systems. This enhancement will ensure the RCAF remains equipped with cutting-edge defense technologies for years to come. This successful flight comes just five months after Bell secured the In-Service Support (ISS) contract to provide sustained support for the RCAF’s fleet through 2039.

Danny Maldonado, Chief Commercial Officer at Bell, highlighted the enduring value of the Bell 412, stating, “The Bell 412 remains a preferred aircraft for militaries worldwide, and the RCAF operates the largest and best-equipped militarized fleet of 412s.” He expressed pride in continuing the partnership with the RCAF and enhancing their mission capabilities with next-generation technologies.

Bell celebrated this historic flight with an event at their Commercial Centre of Excellence, where attendees witnessed the first flight of the upgraded platform. The CH-146 Griffon fleet serves a wide range of missions for the RCAF, including global humanitarian relief under the United Nations, reassurance measures under NATO, and domestic Search and Rescue operations.

Michael Nault, General Manager of Bell Textron Canada, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting the Canadian Armed Forces, stating, “As Canada’s sole in-country helicopter manufacturer, Bell is a proud partner of the Canadian Armed Forces. Our local presence allows us to collaborate closely with the Canadian government and other local customers to meet their aircraft needs.”

The first upgraded CH-146 Griffon under the GLLE project is expected to be delivered to the Canadian government in 2026, subject to military certification. Bell Textron Canada Ltd. (BTCL), established in 1986 and based in Mirabel, Quebec, is dedicated to providing exceptional customer experience and superior service and support worldwide.
