Beloved ostrich Karen, a resident of the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center in Kansas, has sadly passed away after ingesting a staff member’s keys. The 5-year-old ostrich, known for her playful nature and fondness for dancing, reached beyond her exhibit’s fence to grab the keys, leading to a series of unsuccessful attempts to retrieve them.
Despite consulting with experts across the country and undertaking both surgical and non-surgical procedures to minimize the impact of the keys, the zoo’s efforts proved futile. With a heavy heart, the zoo announced that Karen’s condition had deteriorated, and the decision was made to euthanize her.
Topeka Zoo Interim Director Fawn Moser expressed the zoo’s profound grief over Karen’s loss. She described Karen as more than just an animal, but a cherished member of their community. The animal care team, who had formed deep bonds with Karen during her time at the zoo, was particularly affected by her passing.
The zoo’s commitment to the well-being of its animals remained unwavering. They emphasized their determination to investigate the incident thoroughly and take appropriate actions regarding the staff member involved. Additionally, they pledged to review and strengthen safety protocols to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Karen’s presence at the Topeka Zoo since March 2023 had brought joy to countless visitors. Her playful antics in water and her graceful dance moves had earned her the affection of all who knew her. Her memory will continue to be honored by the zoo and the community she touched during her brief but impactful life.
