A cherished ostrich at the Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center in Kansas, named Karen, has sadly passed away after ingesting a staff member’s keys. The zoo announced the heartbreaking news on Friday, revealing that the 5-year-old ostrich had reached beyond her exhibit’s fence and consumed the keys.
Despite consulting with experts across the United States and implementing both surgical and non-surgical measures, the zoo’s efforts to mitigate the impact of the keys proved unsuccessful. The zoo’s interim director, Fawn Moser, stated in an email that Karen was euthanized on Thursday and passed away in the compassionate hands of staff.
The zoo expressed profound sadness at the loss of Karen, describing her not merely as an animal but as a beloved member of their community. Their thoughts and condolences extended to the dedicated animal care team, who had forged deep bonds with Karen during her time at the zoo.
Karen had resided at the zoo since March 2023 and was renowned for her playful nature, especially her love for water and her captivating dance moves that earned her the title of ‘dancing queen.’ The zoo emphasized that it had initiated an investigation and was taking appropriate actions regarding the staff member involved. They also affirmed their commitment to reviewing and strengthening safety protocols for all animals in their care.
The Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center is home to over 300 animals, showcased across its expansive 35-acre site.
