The Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center in Kansas is mourning the loss of Karen, a beloved 5-year-old ostrich who passed away on Thursday after swallowing a staff member’s keys.
Karen had reached beyond her exhibit’s fence and grabbed the keys, which she then ingested. Zoo staff immediately consulted with experts around the country to explore surgical and non-surgical options to remove the keys. However, all efforts were unsuccessful.
Interim Director Fawn Moser expressed the zoo’s deep sadness over Karen’s untimely demise. ‘She was not just an animal; she was a beloved member of our community,’ Moser said in a statement. Karen had been a resident of the zoo since March 2023 and was known for her playful nature, especially her love of dancing and playing in water.
The zoo has launched an investigation into the incident and is reviewing its safety protocols to prevent similar occurrences. The zoo is also taking appropriate actions regarding the staff member involved.
The Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center is home to over 300 animals across 35 acres, making it a popular destination for animal lovers and families in the area.
