Bengaluru Battened Down: Orange Alert Issued as Heavy Rains Lash City, Schools Closed

Bengaluru is facing a deluge as heavy rains continue to lash the city, prompting the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an ‘orange’ alert. The alert signals a high risk of heavy rainfall in the coming days, leading the city authorities to take precautionary measures to ensure public safety.

In light of the intense rainfall, the Karnataka government has ordered the closure of all aided and private schools, Anganwadi centers, and high schools in Bengaluru on October 16, 2024. Public schools are already closed for Dussehra holidays.

“Due to continuous rains in Bengaluru, the Met Department has issued an orange alert for the next two days. As a precautionary measure in the interest of students, all taluk Anganwadi centers, private/aided primary and high schools of Bengaluru City will be closed on Wednesday,” a government order stated.

The city’s infrastructure is struggling to cope with the heavy rainfall, leading to localized flooding and traffic disruptions. Officials are urging residents to stay indoors as much as possible and avoid unnecessary travel.

Bengaluru’s rainfall is part of a larger pattern of heavy downpours across southern India. Several states are experiencing intense rainfall, leading to flooding, landslides, and other weather-related challenges. Rescue and relief operations are underway in affected areas, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
