As the southwest monsoon journeyed further into the south Peninsular region, Bengaluru shattered a 133-year-old record on Sunday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the city received an unprecedented 111.1 mm of rainfall, surpassing the previous highest of 101.6 mm recorded on June 16, 1891. This exceptional downpour has marked the city’s highest daily rainfall in June for over a century. The average rainfall for Bengaluru in June stands at 106.5 mm. Notably, this heavy rainfall coincides with El Niño transitioning to ENSO-neutral. El Niño, which emerged in June 2023 and led to insufficient rainfall in India, is anticipated to transition to the cooler phase, La Niña, as early as June-August or July-September. This shift is expected to bring more precipitation to Bengaluru. The weather bureau forecasts continued rainfall for the next two days, accompanied by overcast conditions and moderate to heavy thundershowers. Meanwhile, heat wave conditions prevail in isolated regions of northern and central India, including parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, West Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and East Madhya Pradesh. Maximum temperatures have witnessed a slight decline over some parts of East Madhya Pradesh and other regions. However, heat wave conditions persist in certain areas of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Rajasthan, with isolated pockets in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh experiencing similar conditions. The highest maximum temperature of 45.4°C was recorded in Sri Ganganagar of West Rajasthan on Monday. The weather office provides a glimmer of relief with its prediction of rainfall or thunderstorms in a few places over the plains of Northwest India from Wednesday to Friday. However, other parts of northwest India are likely to continue experiencing heat waves. Hot and humid conditions are expected to prevail in isolated pockets of Odisha, Bihar, Konkan and Goa, and Gangetic West Bengal over the next few days.
