A wave of shock and anger has swept through Bengaluru following the alleged sexual assault of a college student in the early hours of Sunday. The incident, which mirrors the recent tragic case of a doctor’s murder in Kolkata, has once again brought to light the urgent need for heightened security measures for women in India.
According to police reports, the victim, a final year degree student, was returning home to Hebbagodi after a gathering in Koramangala when she accepted a ride from an unknown biker. During the journey, she was allegedly assaulted and raped.
The police, led by Additional Commissioner of Police (East Zone) Raman Gupta, have swiftly initiated an investigation and formed five teams to track down the accused. They have confirmed that a rape case has been registered and investigations are ongoing.
While the details of the incident remain under investigation, police suspect the biker who offered the lift is the perpetrator. They have been actively interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence.
This incident comes on the heels of the ongoing protests in Kolkata, where students and junior doctors are demanding justice for the late RG Kar Medical College and Hospital doctor, whose body was found in a seminar room on August 9th. The investigation into her death has taken a dramatic turn, with the police now focusing on a possible murder instead of the initial claim of suicide.
The recent events in both Kolkata and Bengaluru underscore the deep-rooted issue of violence against women in India. The need for stronger law enforcement, public awareness campaigns, and social reform to address this issue is more urgent than ever before.
