Best Foods to Reduce Inflammation and Fight Disease

Health experts have revealed the best foods to consume if you are trying to cut down the risk of developing diabetes, cancer or dementia.

The specialists, from Harvard School of Public Health, shared that each of these foods, including specific nuts and fruits, are packed with high anti-inflammatory properties. They suggested that by making the right snack choices, you could dramatically reduce inflammation.

Unfortunately, the experts also provided a list of popular items to avoid that will have the opposite reaction such as chips.

Howard E. LeWine, MD, professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the institution, stressed: “Many major diseases that plague us – including cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, depression, and Alzheimer’s – have been linked to chronic inflammation.”

Another expert named, Dr. Frank HU, highlighted findings from experimental studies which showed that certain beverages can also tackle inflammation. He explained that these foods can also have a positive effect on your mood and “overall quality of life”.

He said: “Choose the right anti-inflammatory foods, and you may be able to reduce your risk of illness. Consistently pick the wrong ones, and you could accelerate the inflammatory disease process. Some of the foods that have been associated with an increased risk for chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease are also associated with excess inflammation. It’s not surprising, since inflammation is an important underlying mechanism for the development of these diseases.”

The experts recommended the following foods:

* Tomatoes
* Blueberries
* Olive oil
* Green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, kale, and collards
* Nuts like almonds and walnuts
* Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, tuna, and sardines
* Fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, cherries, and oranges

Foods that cause inflammation:

* Refined carbohydrates, such as white bread and pastries
* French fries and other fried foods
* Soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages
* Red meat (burgers, steaks) and processed meat (hot dogs, sausage)
* Margarine, shortening, and lard
