Beware: Counterfeit Samsung 1080 Pro PCIe Gen 5 SSDs on AliExpress
Shoppers on AliExpress should be cautious about listings claiming to sell Samsung 1080 Pro PCIe Gen 5 SSDs.
These devices, priced suspiciously low at under $29 USD for a 4TB capacity, are not genuine Samsung products. They feature inconsistent performance specifications, use outdated hardware, and deliver abysmal performance. A benchmark by Korean tech site Quasarzone confirmed their fake nature.
The counterfeit 1080 Pro drives employ a single 96-layer NAND chip, Realtek controller, and PCIe Gen 3 support. Their performance is significantly worse than genuine Samsung 980 Pro drives, falling below 10% in many tests. File transfers slow down drastically once the drives reach 3% capacity.
Despite the obvious signs of fraud, some customer reviews on AliExpress have praised the fake drives. This suggests that the scammers may have resorted to fake reviews to boost their credibility.
The genuine Samsung 990 Pro replacement has yet to be released. However, it is highly unlikely to perform as poorly as these counterfeit 1080 Pro drives.
