Beyond the Glitter: Why Dubai Deserves More Than Just a ‘Love Island Reject’ Label

When I mention Dubai as my next travel destination, I’m often met with a tired, dismissive response: “I have no desire to go there.” These responses, often from people who haven’t even set foot in the city, are irritating. They typically cite the lack of culture, excessive materialism, and an influx of influencers and reality TV castoffs. They declare it the most overrated holiday destination, missing the point entirely. Dubai is much more than the curated Instagram feed it has become.

My first experience with Dubai was as a child, when my extended family moved there. Back then, it was a lesser-known city. I remember witnessing the construction of The Palm, the man-made island that now embodies Dubai’s luxurious side. Today, the city is synonymous with extravagant brunches and beach clubs, but those are just the tip of the iceberg. Dubai’s true beauty lies in its natural landscapes, its rich cultural tapestry, and its culinary adventures.

Food Glorious Food

Dubai offers a diverse culinary scene, with restaurants catering to every palate. From fine French dining at Couqley to the seasonal Indian menu at Carnival by Trèsind, there’s something for everyone. But to truly understand the city’s soul, venture beyond the glitz and glamour and explore Old Dubai.

For a captivating food tour, I recommend Frying Pan Adventures. Their Middle Eastern Food Pilgrimage takes you through Al Rigga, a historic district in Deira. Led by Farida, a passionate local guide who loves her neighborhood, the tour offers an authentic glimpse into a different side of Dubai. Farida, alongside her sister Avra (who you might recognize from the Dubai episode of Netflix’s ‘Somebody Feed Phil’), takes you on a culinary journey through this vibrant neighborhood, where you’ll taste some of the most delicious shawarma and chickpea falafel. You’ll also sample Masgouf, a traditional Iraqi fish dish, and indulge in sweet delights at Samadi Sweets.

For a truly Emirati experience, head to the Arabian Tea House in Al Fahidi. This traditional restaurant, established in 1997, serves up authentic seafood dishes, like the Machboos Robyan (prawns with spiced rice). For a modern take on Arabic cuisine, Three By Eva, a chic Lebanese restaurant in Jumeirah, offers a delicious menu and a relaxed, inviting atmosphere.

At One with Nature

Dubai’s desert landscapes are awe-inspiring, and dune bashing tours offer a thrilling way to experience them. However, it’s crucial to choose sustainable options like Platinum Heritage. Their tours prioritize environmental conservation, offering a responsible way to explore the desert.

I participated in Platinum Heritage’s Falconry and Nature Safari, which begins at sunrise. The early morning drive, in a vintage open-top Land Rover, is unforgettable. After a traditional Bedouin breakfast, you’ll have the chance to witness falconry demonstrations, enjoy a camel ride, and learn about the diverse flora and fauna of the desert.

Just a short drive from Dubai, Hatta, a picturesque town, offers a stunning mountainous landscape. Explore the area by mountain biking, kayaking on the Hatta Dam, or horseback riding with Hatta Horses.

Take to the Water

For a thrilling adventure on the water, try Hero Boats, which allows you to drive your own boat along Dubai’s iconic coastline. The experience is exhilarating, offering a unique perspective of Dubai’s waterfront.

If you prefer a more relaxed beach experience, Byron Bathers, a laid-back beach club on the shores of The Palm, provides a welcoming atmosphere with views of the city. Enjoy delicious seafood, lounging by the pool, or on sun loungers, while enjoying the friendly vibe and stunning views.

Local Produce

The Ripe Market, a community-driven concept, offers a vibrant marketplace for local businesses. Held every weekend from October to May, it features a wide range of products, from handcrafted goods to delicious food vendors. It’s a great place to find fresh produce, unique souvenirs, and enjoy a leisurely afternoon surrounded by local entrepreneurs.

The UAE’s Largest Mosque

While not located in Dubai, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is a must-see. This impressive structure, the UAE’s largest mosque, can accommodate over 40,000 worshippers and is open to non-Muslim visitors.

Admire the intricate floral designs and semi-precious stones adorning the pristine white marble walls. The mosque is truly breathtaking, and the large chandeliers, made with Swarovski crystals and gold, are a sight to behold.

Beyond the Stereotypes

Dubai offers a wealth of experiences beyond its glamorous reputation. It’s a city that embraces diverse cultures, natural beauty, and culinary adventures. Don’t let the stereotypes deter you from exploring all that Dubai has to offer.

You might be surprised at what you discover. I, for one, am already planning my next trip.
