India’s Yuki Bhambri and his French partner Albano Olivetti bowed out of the US Open men’s doubles tournament on Sunday after a straight-set loss to top seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacia Zeballos in the round of 16. The Spanish-Argentine duo proved too strong for the Indo-French pair, winning 6-2, 6-2. Despite the defeat, Bhambri and Olivetti had a commendable run, reaching the pre-quarterfinals after overcoming 15th seeds Austin Krajicek and Jean-Julien Roger in the second round.
Meanwhile, Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden will take on their round of 16 match on Monday. Earlier in the day, Bopanna and his Indonesian mixed doubles partner Aldila Sutjiadi made a remarkable comeback to secure a spot in the quarterfinals. The eighth-seeded pair faced a tough challenge against John Pears of Australia and Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic. Despite losing the first set without winning a single game, Bopanna and Sutjiadi rallied back to win 0-6, 7-6(5), 10-7 after an intense match that lasted one hour and 13 minutes. Their next opponents will be fourth seeds Matthew Ebden and Barbora Krejcikova.
