India’s Yuki Bhambri and his French partner Albano Olivetti had a strong run at the Chengdu Open 2024 in China, reaching the men’s doubles final. They fought their way through the tournament, defeating the second-seeded pair of Ivan Dodig and Rafael Matos in a thrilling semifinal match that went to a tiebreaker. They also showcased resilience in the quarterfinal, overcoming a first-set deficit to clinch a hard-fought victory.
However, their journey ended in the final against the top-seeded French duo of Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul. Despite a valiant effort, Bhambri and Olivetti fell short, losing 6-4, 4-6, [10-4].
Meanwhile, Sumit Nagal, India’s top-ranked player, faced an early exit in the China Open in Beijing. He withdrew from both the Davis Cup team and the Hangzhou Open, and his performance in Beijing reflected this. He suffered a straight-sets loss to Pavel Kotov of Russia in the first qualifying round, ending his campaign in the tournament.
