Sunil Mittal, chairman of Bharti Airtel, is one such figure. His gross remuneration for the financial year 2023-24 skyrocketed to Rs 32.27 crore, as reported by the company in its annual report and by MoneyControl.
This significant increase can be attributed to a combination of factors. Mittal’s salary and allowances amounted to an estimated Rs 21.57 crore, while performance-linked incentives (PLI) added another Rs 7.5 crore to his earnings. Additionally, he received Rs 3.19 crore in perquisites.
The 66-year-old Mittal stands as one of India’s wealthiest businessmen. According to Forbes, he possesses a real-time net worth of USD 11.5 billion, equivalent to Rs 96,300 crore as of August 1. This places him at the 181st position on Forbes’ real-time billionaire list. Mittal has also been honored with the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian awards.
His company, Bharti Airtel, commands a market capitalization of Rs 886,000 crore as of August 1. With over 500 million customers across South Asia and Africa, the company enjoys a significant presence in the telecommunications sector, as reported by Forbes.
Mittal hails from Ludhiana and is a first-generation entrepreneur. He embarked on his entrepreneurial journey in April 1976 at the young age of 18. In September 2010, his son, Shravin Mittal, joined Bharti Airtel as a manager. Mittal implemented strategic changes within Bharti Airtel in 2016 to ensure the company could effectively compete against the launch of Mukesh Ambani’s Jio.
