US President Joe Biden has declared his unwavering commitment to the Quad, assuring its continued strength and influence beyond the upcoming US presidential elections in November 2024. While engaging with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Quad Leaders’ Summit, Biden addressed concerns about the Quad’s future by emphatically stating, “Way beyond November…” This reassurance, accompanied by a reassuring arm around PM Modi and a thumbs-up gesture, underscores the significance Biden attaches to the strategic alliance.
The US presidential elections, scheduled for November 5, 2024, are anticipated to be a closely contested race between former US President and Republican candidate Donald Trump and US Vice-President and Democrat Kamala Harris. Amidst this political landscape, Biden’s assurance about the Quad’s long-term viability underscores the critical role the alliance plays in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
Prime Minister Modi, who arrived in the US on Saturday to participate in the Quad Leaders’ Summit, the Summit of the Future, and the Quad Cancer Moonshot event, also engaged in bilateral meetings with President Biden, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Japan’s Fumio Kishida.
The Ministry of External Affairs reported a meeting hosted by Joe Biden for PM Modi at his residence in Wilmington, Delaware. This meeting, which took place on Saturday, provided a platform for both leaders to reaffirm their commitment to the comprehensive global strategic partnership between India and the US. PM Modi expressed his appreciation for President Biden’s contribution in strengthening this partnership, highlighting the significance of the June 2023 State visit to the USA and President Biden’s visit to India in September 2023 for the G-20 Leaders’ Summit. He emphasized that these visits have infused renewed dynamism and depth into the India-US relationship.
During their conversation, the two leaders explored avenues for further enhancing bilateral cooperation in areas of shared interest. They exchanged perspectives on global and regional issues, including the Indo-Pacific region, recognizing its importance for both nations. They expressed confidence in the enduring strength and resilience of the relationship, reaffirming their belief in its significance for all areas of human endeavor between India and the US.
