In a move aimed at appealing to football fans, President Biden’s reelection campaign released a digital advertisement ahead of the NFL draft on Thursday night, taking a jab at former President Trump for his comments that football is ‘boring.’ The 20-second ad opens with a clip of Trump saying at a rally that ‘football is boring as hell,’ followed by a photograph of Biden with Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce during a visit to the White House after the team’s Super Bowl victory last year. The ad also includes Trump saying ‘nobody cares about football because of it… it’s boring,’ interspersed with shots of Biden holding a football and interacting with players. The ad concludes with the message ‘Make the right pick in November.’
The ad’s release was timed to coincide with the first round of the NFL draft in Detroit. According to the president’s campaign, the ad is intended to highlight that ‘Biden is a proud football fan, cheering alongside the over 120 million Americans who watched this year’s Super Bowl.’
Trump’s campaign responded to the ad with a post on social media, stating ‘You just posted a video where Biden could barely hold up a football. Dumbasses.’ The post also included a video of Trump throwing a football in 1992, with the caption ‘Here’s what a real athlete looks like.’
Second gentleman Doug Emhoff, who attended the draft, released a statement saying that Americans come together over football, while Trump would likely ‘be sitting on the sidelines trying to make tonight about himself, rage-posting on his failing social media platform and spewing his extreme, divisive, and historically unpopular agenda.’
Emhoff further stated that ‘Donald Trump’s hatred for football is as out-of-touch as his extreme agenda: his threats to democracy, his constant attacks on women’s rights, and his economic policies that leave working families out to dry.’
