US President Joe Biden has imposed heavy tariffs on a wide range of goods imported from China, including batteries, electric vehicles (EVs), steel, solar cells, and aluminium. These tariffs are intended to protect American manufacturing and ensure that the United States is not held back by unfair trade practices. Speaking from the Rose Garden of the White House, Biden emphasized the importance of fair competition with China and expressed confidence that the United States is well-positioned to win the 21st-century economic competition. Biden asserted that the Chinese government has been heavily subsidizing various Chinese industries, including steel, aluminium, semiconductors, solar panels, and essential health equipment, for years. These subsidies have allowed Chinese companies to produce quantities far exceeding global demand and dump their surplus products onto the market at unfairly low prices, resulting in the closure of numerous manufacturers worldwide. In addition to the tariffs, President Biden has initiated a process to seek exemptions for specific production machinery, enabling solar and clean manufacturers to procure equipment while broadening their supplier base. US Trade Representative Katherine Tai affirmed the need for these tariffs, acknowledging that the previous administration’s trade agreement with China did not succeed in bolstering American exports or manufacturing.
