In a blistering speech, US President Joe Biden took aim at former President Donald Trump’s religious beliefs and denounced the Supreme Court’s recent decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion nationwide. Speaking at a political gathering in Florida, Biden accused Trump of describing the Dobbs decision as a ‘miracle,’ a remark that Biden attributed to a Bible that Trump has been attempting to sell. Biden expressed skepticism about the contents of the Bible, saying, ‘I almost wanted to buy one just to see what the hell is in it.’
Biden’s comments come as the issue of abortion has emerged as a key battleground in the upcoming presidential elections. Democrats believe that stringent restrictions on abortion will galvanize their base and help them defeat Trump if he runs again in 2024. Florida, a crucial swing state with 30 Electoral College votes, has traditionally been hotly contested but has recently shifted towards Republican candidates. In the 2020 election, Trump won Florida with 51.2% of the vote, while Biden received 47.9%. Similarly, in the 2022 gubernatorial race, Republican Ron DeSantis won by a landslide, capturing 59.4% of the vote.
Biden’s speech was part of a broader campaign swing through Florida, where he has been rallying supporters and raising funds. The state is seen as a critical battleground in the upcoming presidential race, and both Democrats and Republicans are expected to spend heavily on advertising and voter outreach efforts there.
