President Joe Biden has nominated Portland lawyer Stacey Neumann to fill an upcoming vacancy in Maine’s U.S. District Court. Neumann, a private attorney and partner at Murray, Plumb & Murray, previously served as a prosecutor for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maine and a federal public defender in Vermont.
Neumann did not respond to requests for comment on her nomination. The U.S. Senate will vote on whether to approve Neumann’s nomination, which would fill the opening left by Judge Jon Levy, who plans to retire on May 5. Levy, who joined the U.S. District Court in 2014, was the chief judge from 2019 to 2022. He was succeeded by Judge Lance Walker in Bangor.
The chief judge is responsible for overseeing the federal court’s administrative operations, including a budget of over $5.6 million and a staff of more than 100 people.
