Biden to Host Quad Leaders in Wilmington for Strategic Meeting

The White House has announced that President Biden will host the leaders of Australia, India, and Japan for a meeting of the Quad on September 21st. This significant gathering will take place in Wilmington, Delaware, marking the first time President Biden has hosted foreign leaders at his home since assuming office.

The meeting comes at a crucial time as President Biden shifts his focus from campaigning to tackling key domestic and international policy issues. Strengthening alliances and preparing for a smooth transition to the next administration are high on his agenda.

The White House emphasized the importance of the Quad to all participating countries, stating that President Biden “looks forward to welcoming Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India, and Prime Minister Kishida Fumio of Japan.” This meeting underscores the deep personal relationships President Biden has built with each of the Quad leaders.

The Biden-Harris Administration has prioritized elevating and institutionalizing the Quad. This commitment was evident in the first-ever Quad Leaders Summit hosted at the White House in 2021 and the subsequent annual summits. The Quad Foreign Ministers have met eight times in recent years, and governments continue to coordinate and collaborate at all levels.

The upcoming Quad Leaders Summit will center on bolstering the strategic convergence among the participating nations. The agenda includes advancing their shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific region and delivering tangible benefits for partners in the region. Key areas of focus will encompass health security, natural disaster response, maritime security, high-quality infrastructure, critical and emerging technology, climate and clean energy, and cybersecurity.

The next Quad Summit is scheduled to be hosted by India.
