President Joe Biden’s approval rating has experienced a notable rise, increasing by 13 points in recent months. The USA Today/Suffolk poll indicates that 48% of voters approve of Biden’s performance, while 49% disapprove. This marks a significant shift from the previous poll conducted in March, where only 41% approved of Biden’s performance.
The White House attributes this surge to Biden’s success in navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, reviving the economy, and strengthening international alliances. White House communications director Ben LaBolt emphasizes that more Americans are recognizing Biden’s leadership during a series of crises and his efforts to secure a prosperous future.
Meanwhile, the poll also reveals Vice President Kamala Harris holding a lead over former President Donald Trump in a potential 2024 election, with 48% favoring Harris and 43% supporting Trump. This represents a seven-point swing from the March poll where Trump led Biden.
The poll suggests that voters’ views on immigration may have contributed to Harris’s lead, as voters favored Trump by a smaller margin (50%-47%) compared to March when Trump held a 13-point advantage on this issue.
The Trump campaign, however, maintains that Trump is building a strong movement to make America great again, attracting support from disaffected Democrats and Independents. They argue that voters trust Trump on key issues like crime, the economy, and immigration, citing his accomplishments during his presidency. The Trump campaign also criticizes Harris’s record, alleging that she has damaged the economy, facilitated illegal immigration, and supported rioters.
The USA Today/Suffolk poll, conducted between August 25th and 28th, surveyed 1,000 likely voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points. The poll’s findings offer a glimpse into the evolving political landscape and the potential dynamics of the upcoming election.
