Big Sable Light Adds Extra Bus Days for Enhanced Accessibility

In a bid to enhance accessibility and provide more opportunities for visitors to experience the iconic Big Sable Light, Ludington State Park and the Sable Point Lighthouse Keepers Association have announced the addition of two extra bus days in 2024 and 2025, bringing the total to eight. This move is particularly significant in light of the park’s planned 10-month closure for construction, which will inevitably impact the lighthouse’s operating season and revenue.

To ensure maximum convenience, bus services will operate from noon to 5 p.m. on designated bus days. Visitors can park their vehicles in the main parking lot at the entrance of Ludington State Park, purchase their bus tickets at the tent located near the park office, and board the bus. Round-trip tickets are priced at $6 for adults and $4 for students aged 17 and below, while one-way tickets cost $3 for adults and $2 for students. It’s worth noting that an additional charge of $8 for adults and $5 for students applies for those wishing to climb the lighthouse. Children must be at least 40 inches tall to climb, and carrying children up the stairs is strictly prohibited.

The Big Sable Light will officially open its doors for the season on Tuesday, May 7th, welcoming visitors from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, throughout the summer. Monday hours will be added during July. The season is tentatively scheduled to end on October 21st, although the state park is expected to close from September 3rd to July 1st, 2025, for renovations. During this closure, visitors will not be permitted north of the Big Sable River, affecting areas such as the dam, footbridge, and highway bridge. However, areas south of the river, including the Lake Michigan beach along M-116 and dune trails off of Piney Ridge Road, will remain open. Additionally, northern areas of the park can still be accessed via Hamlin Lake and Nordhouse Dunes.

This initiative to increase bus days is a testament to the commitment of Ludington State Park and the Sable Point Lighthouse Keepers Association to provide a more inclusive and accessible experience for all visitors. By offering convenient bus transportation, individuals with limited mobility and those seeking a more comfortable journey can fully immerse themselves in the beauty and history of Big Sable Light.
