Bergdorf Goodman transformed into a haven for fashion enthusiasts on Wednesday night, hosting a cocktail party dedicated to the legacy of the legendary photographer Bill Cunningham. The event celebrated two new projects honoring his impactful career: a new book and a fashion collection.
The first highlight was the release of “The Battle of Versailles: The Fashion Showdown of 1973,” a book by author and filmmaker Mark Bozek. Bozek was present to sign copies, showcasing behind-the-scenes photographs by Bill Cunningham and Jean-Luce Huré, capturing the iconic 1973 fashion clash between American and French designers. Fashion editors, influencers, and collectors flocked to Bergdorf Goodman to secure their own signed copies, including Pat Cleveland, who wrote the introduction to the book and is featured on the cover.
The second homage to Bill Cunningham was the unveiling of Sacai’s new collection inspired by his unique style. T-shirts and hoodies emblazoned with Cunningham quotes were displayed alongside Sacai’s new Cunningham-inspired jacket, sold exclusively at Bergdorf Goodman and showcased in the store’s window. The chic blue jacket, a signature element of Cunningham’s wardrobe, was worn by several guests at the party.
Chitose Abe, the creative director of Sacai, graced the event sporting a Sacai t-shirt printed with the poignant Bill Cunningham quote: “Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.”
The party itself unfolded at Goodman’s Bar at Bergdorf Goodman, a quintessential New York City destination for style and sophistication. Guests adorned themselves in an array of black and white ensembles, punctuated with touches of blue reminiscent of Cunningham’s iconic work jacket.
Linda Fargo, a prominent figure at Bergdorf Goodman, reminisced about her friendship with Cunningham, sharing with Vogue, “We all became very tight. Bill basically lived on the perch of 5th Avenue between 57th and 58th Streets. Bill was always there. He loved creativity, especially if it was related to fashion. We were always there in the windows, and Bill was one of our greatest fans. It felt like we lived together on 5th Avenue.” The evening was a testament to the enduring influence of Bill Cunningham, whose eye for fashion and dedication to capturing the essence of style continue to inspire generations of fashion enthusiasts.
