After making waves at Coachella with a surprise appearance where she teased new music, Billie Eilish is officially dropping new tunes next month. In her latest interview, the musician got candid about her coming out experience and her upcoming album, highlighting the role one particular song, “Lunch,” played in her journey of self-discovery.
“That song was actually part of what helped me become who I am, to be real,” Billie said of “Lunch.” “I wrote some of it before even doing anything with a girl, and then wrote the rest after. I’ve been in love with girls for my whole life, but I just didn’t understand — until, last year, I realized I wanted my face in a vagina.”
Throughout her career, Billie has kept her love life private, expressing frustration that her sexuality became a topic of discussion. In November 2023, she acknowledged her attraction to women, but emphasized that she didn’t plan on publicly discussing her sexuality. At Variety’s Hitmakers event, she revealed that she didn’t intend to come out during that initial interview, believing it was obvious to others.
After the event, Billie posted on Instagram, expressing her irritation at being “outed” on a red carpet. She has since reflected on the moment, admitting that she overreacted. “The whole world suddenly decided who I was, and I didn’t get to say anything or control any of it. Nobody should be pressured into being one thing or the other,” she said.
Billie emphasized the importance of respecting individual journeys of self-discovery, highlighting the pressure that the internet can put on people to define their sexuality. “I know everybody’s been thinking this about me for years and years, but I’m only figuring out myself now,” she added.
